I just want to confirm that it is “ok” to hate grad school. Most people find graduate school very difficult to do, and feel that they are not smart enough for grad school. I have only met a few people that enjoyed grad school, and felt smart during the grad school process.
I want to highlight a couple of things about grad school that might make you feel better:
You are not supposed to like graduate school. You are being pushed to become a better person, and you would not grow as a person if you were not pushed. It is like doing a marathon - the joy comes after from the sense of accomplishment, not during the process of learning how to run marathons.
Almost everyone I know does not feel smart during graduate school. Most people in grad school or when they are doing their PhD feel dumb. If you take all of the brightest students in undergrad and put them into a room, it creates a new sample of people, and you are likely somewhere in the mean of the sample.
Graduate school is a lot more fun if you change your mindset from a ‘this is work’ mindset to a ‘I am growing mindset.’
Smiling during your working hours makes the process fun. I know this sounds stupid and you will look silly studying with a grin, but you ought to try this process of smiling.
You are likely playing too much of the social comparison game. When you are in the general public, it is much easier to not know where you stand, but when you are in graduate school, you are well aware of where you stand relative to everyone else. Try switch your frame of reference to how much you have grown over the past year
