How To Talk To A Professor: Tips And Advice From A Business School Professor Of Innovation Video
There are two important things you want to consider when you talk to a Professor. First, treat other people with respect. Second, be genuinely interested in what they have to say.
If you talk to the professor about your grade, most professors will respond very positively if you tell them you just need help with why you did poorly. If you go and are accusatory, almost all professors will shut down and will not work with you. By the way, asking for grade adjustments, just because of a personal reason will likely not work. You have to demonstrate a rationale or have the professor work through the problem such that they can see where things are problematic.
You will likely have better success if you talk to the professor about research. Professors spend most of their time thinking about research, and there is a lot to say about their topic. They will likely get quite engaged with their research.
A couple of things to remember about talking to Professors:
1. Professors are often just as nervous to chat as you are.
2. Professors are likely to take a bit of time to warm up. They are busy thinking about an idea.
3. If you are emotional or angry, it will be largely ineffective.
4. If you want to build a relationship with a professor, start out very small. Just do simple, small things for them.
