Academic Jobs?: How To Get An Academic Job After Graduate School? - Thesis Help Video

In this video, I talk about how you get an academic job as a professor after graduate school. This video is geared towards those that are doing a masters and thinking of doing a PhD, and those that are currently in a PhD program. This especially relevant for those that are in a PhD program in a business school, and are thinking about how to get a job as a professor.

Most of us think that we simply just published a couple of papers and then apply to different positions to get an academic job after graduate school. Simply just apply and Ta-da! We get that job - “the job.”

However, this rarely occurs. Academia should be thought of in terms of a small world and in terms of building long-term trusting friendship relationships. It is extremely rare to get a academic position at a very high status institution on your first position. Rather, it is about building long-term relationships that occur over 5-20 years, and building a reputation of somebody that people would like to do research with.

How do you go about building this reputation? Focus at doing good work. Your job is to simply focus on doing the best work you can do. Once you are doing good work, focus on making it better. Emulate the top people in the field in terms of how they are writing and doing research.

Focus on being a decent person. Try to help other people out and be ‘of service’ to as many people as you possibly can. Your only job, like other jobs, is to simply make other people look better. The more that you can do this at scale the better off you will be.

Enjoy the process. Build ‘your’ academic career. This is a very long career, and you have to enjoy the process of slowly building a reputation to get the academic job. The biggest thing that I see is a selection bias against those that try to work extremely hard and fizzle during graduate school, or don’t have research career objectives and choose to do something other than academic research. There are many moments we have to make a decision to prioritize research over something else for more money. Often, it is those that prioritize the research that continue to persist in the long run, and eventually get “the job.”

**************************

As a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.

r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform

A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.

The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.

About the Site 🌐

This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. 🎥

Origins of the Idea 🌱

The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. 🧠

Challenges Faced 🤔

Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.

Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. 🔍

Creating Truly Random Links 🛠️

The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.

About YouTube 📺

YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. 🌟

Content and Users 🎵

Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.

While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.

Monetization and Impact 🤑

YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.

As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. 📈
