Cave Hill Belfast is an amazing location that overlooks the whole city of Belfast - and further! This basaltic hill that overlooks the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland, forms part of the southeastern border of the Antrim Plateau. Cave Hill is distinguished by its famous Napoleon Nose, which is a basaltic outcrop that resembles the profile of the famous emperor Napoleon. It has been known as the Cave Hill for a long period of time now although it has been given two other different names before, which are "Collinward Mountain" as well as "Ben Madigan" who was once a king of Ulster.
Not only Belfast will be seen from up there, but the Isle of Man could be spotted and even Scotland could appear on those clear days - so you will enjoy lots of different scenery from up there. First of all, Cave Hill has three large caves, the lowest of them is 21 feet long, the one above it is 10 feet long, and the third one above them is 7 feet long - these caves are actually man made and it is believed that they were excavated for iron-mining. The second thing that comes in addition to the caves is McArt's Fort which is on the summit of the hill and is an example of an old rath or ring fort.
Those who are visiting the Cave Hill will get the chance to enjoy and do several things, such as the Cave Hill adventurous playground, the archaeological sites, the visitor centre, and ecotrail gardens, orienteering routes, refreshments, the way-marked walking trails for the casual walkers as well as the serious ramblers, and of course the magnificent views which were the main reason behind bringing people to that place.
There are several trails that you could choose from when it comes to walking up Cave Hill. The first trail is the castle one which would take 30 minutes to walk on the red trail through Belfast castle and gardens which will also contain the "nine cats", this route is 120 meters above sea level and could be started from any car park or from the main entrance to the castle.
