Many people think that most people will go into industry if they get a PhD in innovation or entrepreneurship, this is rarely true. Most people go into academia if they try to get a doctorate in innovation and entrepreneurship. You will not go start a business, or create new technologies.
The majority of the people will become business school professors, or professors in an engineering school. If you get these positions, this is a good career, although there are difficulties, like competitive demands. Academia is generally very competitive.
The people that go to industry after a Doctorate in Innovation And Entrepreneurship, tend to be from DBA (Doctorate of Business Administration) programs. These programs are more focused at providing a doctoral education for those people that are interested in industry or consulting.
What kind of people get a PhD in Innovation and Entrepreneurship? Generally, these are the people that are interested in something, and just curious about the world. There are many things that we still do not know about how innovation and entrepreneurship works. For example, how do entrepreneurs think, and why do we believe that they are somehow different? Where do innovations come from? Much of these ideas will draw upon psychology, sociology, and economics.
If I was to do my PhD over again, would I do it again? To be honest, I don’t know. There are significant costs in pursuing the PhD, but once you get an academic career is exciting and interesting. It really is a personal choice that is likely to depend on who you are, and what your current lifestyle is.
