PERLITE vs VERMICULITE IN GARDEN SOIL | Benefits and Difference Between Perlite and Vermiculite Video

Todays Gardening Video is on Perlite vs Vermiculite in Garden soil, their benefits in gardening and finally the differences between Perlite and Vermiculite and also the disadvantages of using them in your potting soil.
To decide, whether perlite or vermiculite in garden soil or in your potting mix. The difference between perlite vs vermiculite are important to know for the prosperity of your garden.

Perlite and vermiculite are two different substances used for a common purpose, that is for moisture retention and aeration in soil. That means to hold water within soil for plants and also to improve air circulation or aeration of potting mix.
Perlite and vermiculite are quite different in composition and also performance wise. Determining which is better for use in your garden depends on your plant type and its requirements.

So, What is Vermiculite?
Vermiculite can soak up 3 to 4 times its volume in water and absorbs and retains moisture. It also attracts and retains plant nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, calcium and phosphorus.

What is Perlite? It is an amorphous volcanic rock that is rich in silicon. To use as a potting medium, perlite is crushed and also heated to expand the particles.
Perlite looks like porous white balls of varying grades that looks like white granules often resembles foam balls or thermocol balls. It can be easily crushed with your fingers or on pressure.
In Comparison, Perlite and vermiculite are both good at retaining water, but vermiculite acts more like a sponge, holding much more water than perlite and offering less aeration for the plant roots. Perlite retains less water, but because it is porous it allows excess water to drain more readily than vermiculite and improves soil aeration.
Perlite cannot be used in only garden soil, because its readily crushable and will not serve the purpose fully due to compression by heavy garden soil particles. Best use of perlite is in potting mix with various compositions like coco peat, peat moss, sand and other material. Please watch my separate video on Various Potting Mix Formula.
To list out the uses of both vermiculite and perlite:

During garden soil preparation, Vermiculite is ideal for plants that prefer lots of water and Perlite would dry out too rapidly for water-loving plants. One bad effect of overuse specially of Vermiculite is - The excess moisture retained by vermiculite would lead to root rots or plant death. So in any General Potting Mix, use no more than 10% of these substances specially Vermiculite.

About the Site 🌐

This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. πŸŽ₯

Origins of the Idea 🌱

The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. 🧠

Challenges Faced πŸ€”

Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.

Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. πŸ”

Creating Truly Random Links πŸ› οΈ

The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.

About YouTube πŸ“Ί

YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. 🌟

Content and Users 🎡

Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.

While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.

Monetization and Impact πŸ€‘

YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.

As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. πŸ“ˆ
