Should you teach in graduate school? In general, you should teach a little bit, but your focus should mainly be on doing research. You should view graduate school teaching as a necessary evil when you are pursuing your research degrees. It is something that you likely have to do, but you should prioritize your time to focus mostly on research.
What are the benefits of being a graduate student instructor?
1. You gain confidence with the material. This was very important to me and I felt a lot more confident with what I was doing.
2. You gain some small amount of income. The wages that you get for being a graduate school student instructor are typically very low compared to just finishing the degree.
3. Graduate school teaching allows you can build a portfolio of courses that you can teach when you are done graduate school.
What are the costs of teaching during your PhD or Masters programs?
1. It will greatly slow you down in your research progress. Doing research during your graduate school will be the key to actually getting a job or completing graduate school.
2. If you get negative teaching a valuations, it can be very harmful for your soul and for your ability to land your first academic position.
3. It will likely be a large time suck and will drain you emotionally, particularly the first time you teach a course.
What would I do with teaching in graduate school? You should teach one or two courses, and then try to limit the amount of teaching after that in terms of prioritizing your time for research. What about teaching assistantships? You should limit the amount of teaching assistantships, as they carry very little value in the academic world.
