Career Advice For Doctoral Students In Strategy Research Video
When thinking about doing strategy research, you should think about applying some of what you know about strategy to your own careers.
What do we know about strategy? Firms have to create and capture value. Think about ways that you can create more value than you capture. When you first start out in the strategy program, you often want to capture a lot of value, but the reverse is true. You want to capture more value than you capture.
2. Think about product differentiation. How can you has a doctoral student make yourself more valuable and different than your fellow PhD classmates?
3. Think about what style of production you are going to do with your papers? Are you going to do product differentiation, low-cost leader, or a broad/focused strategy? All of these are equally good, but it is wise to think about the strategy you are going to take.
4. Keep going. The biggest predictor of success in the academic career as a PhD in Strategy is perseverance. You can do this!
