What Can We Learn From Success And Failure? Video
Learning from past experiences is critical to improving. However, experience can be a poor teacher. I discuss what you can learn from success and failure.
First, what is success and what is failure? As we understand it, success is performance above a particular reference point. Failure is below that reference point.
Failure is a better teacher than success. Why? The importance of learning from failure occurs because we take greater risks and are more likely to change when we experience failure. Further, we emotionally feel failure a lot more than success.
Failure is important in many contexts in our life, including entrepreneurship, career success, and personal success.
Failure is distinct from mistakes, as mistakes connote inattention or inability to achieve success. Instead, failure includes both mistakes and intentional actions that might need to failure.
There are several strategies for learning from failure in your life or career.
1. Try things that are outside your reach, and are likely to lead to failure. While the failure outcome is not important, what you’re doing is testing your expectation for future performance.
2. Try to identify situations with psychological safety (See Amy Edmondson’s work). These contexts might be more excepting of failure and see the value with it.
3. Be picky at what you try to fail at. Failure is very emotionally taxing, and you want to reduce the amount of anxiety that you feel from not succeeding.
4. View each individual failure as that. It is only a simple failure in one component of your life. Do not get carried away with fixating on failure as our mind tends to wander to the negative. It is important to note that can failure strengthen a person, but also that it can weaken a person if it is repeated many times.
5. Redefine what you view as success. Make your definition of success much more easier to obtain, such that you can view each small failure is the stepping stone to greater success.
In sum, what can we learn from success and failure? Many things can be learnt from success and failure, and these lessons are quite valuable and important for our development.
