In this lecture, I have described the addition of Grignard reagent to α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound. Since Grignard reagent is a harder carbon-based nucleophile, it prefers for 1,2-addition over 1,4-addition. However, upon an increase in bulkiness on the carbonyl group, it was observed that the percentage of 1,4-addition product increases. Furthermore, in the case of some samples Grignard reagent results in a completely 1,4-addition product. Interestingly, if any Cu(I) salt is used with Grignard reagent then the product is exclusively 1,4-addition via the preparation of relatively softer organo-copper nucleophile.
