Mentorship For Grad Students, PostDocs, & Assistant Professors In Business Video
I was speaking to a colleague of mine the other day about mentorship during the PhD programs, and why it is important to have mentors.
Why is having mentors during your PhD journey important? There is a lot of uncertainty about what you should and should do, and a mentor will always be there to help with your graduate journey.
Who are mentors during your graduate school? Generally, mentors are more senior people that are a few years beyond where you are in the graduate journey. Some people might be quite senior if they ‘get it,’ but some people that are out of the loop might not add a lot of value to your discussion. They also should be closely aligned with your personal values and what you do as graduate student.
What can ask your mentors? You should be able to ask them anything, but be careful of their time. I have asked my mentors during my PhD about life, or academic topics that I do not feel comfortable discussing with anyone else.
