A key thing that potential PhDs should be aware of is that academic culture does vary substantially between institution and within academic fields. Here, I mean the system of beliefs and values that academics honor.
How does academic culture vary?
1. Each institution has its own culture. Some schools have an open door or a closed door policy. Others have a culture in which you have to address Professors by the first name or formally as Professor so and so.
2. Academic culture does vary across the academy. You often see people have different views on the value of PhDs and how they should be treated. You also see implicit culture norms between how people between institutions interact.
Why are these implicit cultural norms and values? You can view academia as a battle for ideas and ideologies. The problem with this battle is that there is no clear definition of what is a good idea and what is a bad idea. The only way you can understand how your ideas stand is by your status position within the academic community, or who defers to your ideas. One way to ‘battle’ these ideas is through the implicit beliefs and norms within the academy.
Tips to handle this academic culture:
1. When in doubt about who people are, always treat others with respect and reverence.
2. If people treat you poorly at one moment, disregard this action, as it might be driven by many other rationale that is unobservable. Give qupeople a second chance.
