The Physics of Cherenkov Radiation Video
Cherenkov Radiation is emitted when a high energetic electron travelling through a dielectric medium is moving with a velocity greater than the phase velocity of light in that medium.
It is quite similar to the case of sonic boom created by fighter planes when they travel at a velocity greater than the speed of sound.
When electron is travelling at velocity less than the speed of light in that medium, then it lags behind the wavefronts. However, in the case where the electron is moving faster than the light, the wavefronts lag behind the electron. This leads to a situation when all the emitted wave fronts constructively interfere along a conical section moving with the electron. This creates an intense coherent beam of radiation which is known as Cherenkov radiation.
A similar effect happens with sound waves in the case of sonic boom of jet fighter planes.
What sonic boom is to sound waves, Cherenkov Radiation is to light waves.
Cherenkov Radiation is usually seen as a bluish glow in nuclear reactors, where electrons emitted during nuclear reactions travel in the moderator medium of water.
