Luche Reaction, selective reduction of ketone into secondary (2o) alcohol. Video
This video describes the selective conversion of ฮฑ,ฮฒ-unsaturated ketone into secondary alcohol in the presence of sodium borohydride, methanol and cerium (III) chloride as a catalyst. Furthermore, this reaction reduces ketones but not the aldehyde because of less electron-rich carbonyl oxygen. In fact, I have explained this selectivity in the presence of 3-acetyl cyclopentane carbaldehyde where the ketone was reduced selectively into the secondary (2o) alcohol.
