This video talks about the important task of finding your writing identity, particularly when being an academic writer. Finding a writing identity is normally about finding your voice or latching onto the thing that makes you tick. It is not about your ‘passion’ or doing the thing you love, but is about doing the thing that you can do for years without stopping. This is different than a passion. A passion fades quickly. This is more about finding an ember that you can stoke and turn into a large fire.
There are things that help you find your writing identity. In order to find your writing identity, you should:
1. Write a lot. Aim for writing 5 days a way.
2. Talk about it. You should be able to talk about it.
3. Wonder about it. You should be able to think about it for a long time.
4. Embrace it. You should be able to embrace your topic, even when it is tough.
5. Find many angles. You should be able to think about this topic in many ways. In order to do so, you should be reading very broadly.
As an academic writer, it is about being curious about something or a set of questions for a long time. I am personally interested in organizational learning and technological innovation, but not everyone is. Once you write about this topic for 10-15 years, you can still see that you are just scratching the surface.
